Google Tasks Sync

Feature Request

As a user of both the ByDesign and Google Tasks, I want to enable a two-way synchronization between them, so that my tasks and their statuses are consistently updated across both platforms, providing me with a single source of truth for my to-do list.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Given I have an active sync with Google Tasks, when I create a task in ByDesign, then a corresponding task is created in Google Tasks.

  • Given I have an active sync with Google Tasks, when I create a task in Google Tasks, then a corresponding task is created in ByDesign.

  • Given a task is synced, when I edit its details (e.g., title, due date) in one application, then the changes are reflected in the other.

  • Given a task is synced, when I mark it as complete in one application, then it is marked as complete in the other.

  • Given I create a sub-task under a synced parent task in ByDesign, then a corresponding sub-task is created under the parent task in Google Tasks.

  • Given I create a sub-task under a synced parent task in Google Tasks, then a corresponding sub-task is created under the parent task in ByDesign.

  • Given a synced task or sub-task is deleted in one application, then it is also deleted in the other.

      Google Calendar and Google Tasks are still distinct systems and have their own separate APIs.

      Separate systems

      • Google Calendar: Designed for scheduling events with specific dates and times.

      • Google Tasks: Focused on managing to-do lists and assignments, potentially with due dates but not necessarily specific times.

      Separate APIs

      • Google Calendar API: A RESTful API for interacting with Google Calendar, allowing developers to display, create, and modify events and calendars.

      • Google Tasks API: A separate API that enables developers to manage tasks and task lists within Google Tasks, including creating, reading, updating, and deleting tasks and lists.

      Integration and functionality

      While separate, Google has integrated Google Tasks directly within the Google Calendar interface, making it possible to view and manage tasks alongside scheduled events. Tasks can also be created from within Google Calendar or through other Google Workspace products like Gmail.

      Third-party integration

      Developers can leverage both the Google Calendar API and the Google Tasks API to create integrations with other applications and services. These integrations can streamline workflows, automate task creation, and synchronize data between various platforms. Platforms like Latenode and n8n offer tools for building these kinds of integrations, allowing for workflows such as:

      • Creating tasks automatically from calendar events.

      • Syncing tasks with other project management tools.

      • Converting emails into tasks.

      In essence, while Google Calendar and Google Tasks are distinct, they offer tight integration within the Google ecosystem and provide separate APIs for broader integration with other platforms.
